Sally Blair has become something of a GSU legend. She is more widely known as “GSU Dancing Girl,” because she is almost always sporting her Beats by Dre headphones, dancing along campus streets and hallways. She even has a Facebook page dedicated to her.
Sally is something of a mystery to most people, who only see her dancing past and never really get a chance to talk to her. After finally encountering her last year, I was immediately intrigued by her free spirit. I watched her dance past me a few times as I stared in awe. This semester I finally got the nerve to stop her for a chat!
I expected to be greeted by a “What the heck?” Mainly because I practically attacked her. Although she was a little bewildered as to why I was asking so many questions, she was pretty happy to engage in conversation.
She was listening to Notorious, part of a genre of music that dominates her playlist. She loves hip hop, instrumental hip hop, bass, krump and anything on the Brainfeeder record label. However, she did reveal that trap music was her guilty pleasure. “I like Travis Porter and Waka Flocka, a group out of East Atlanta,” Sally said.
Sally is generally a very healthy person who eats well and runs almost everyday. When I asked her why she dances around campus, Sally very simply stated, “It just feels good!”
Her favorite dance move is called “The Elephant.” Demonstrating it, she slipped her headphones back over her ears, placed her left arm over right and covered her face with her right hand in a Hannibal Lecter sort of mask. Then she began to swing her left arm like a trunk as she bounced to a beat only she could hear.
Sally is a chemical engineering student who has about two years to go to finish her degree. She is a free spirit who loves to travel. Her family moved around a lot when she was a kid and teenager, so she has lived in Atlanta, San Jose and Hong Kong. Although, she said, she loves the west coast of the United States the most.
Sally is a warm, friendly and genuine person. “I love smiling at people,” she said. “And I especially love when they smile back!”
