In Atlanta, it’s all about who you know. Literally. You can say you go to GSU, say you’re a fashion stylist or that you are an “up-and-coming” rapper. -___- But, who do you know? What have you done? What makes you the “go-to” guy? The answer, people, is EXPERIENCE.
“But Johnny, how can I get experience when I’m in school full time and work at Rec Center at night?”
Answer: It’s called a summer internship. And they are OUT THERE! Basically, an internship is the easiest and most professional way to not only get your name out there, but also to add experience bullet points to your resume.
Where do I find these internships?
Answer: Internet. There are thousands (literally, thousands) of internship websites there to help people like you land the exact one you need. I suggest starting with a Google search.
What do I need to apply to an internship?
Answer: A smoking hot resume and matching cover letter, along with an open schedule. Talk to the Career Center at GSU for help with creating your resume and cover letter.
How many should I apply to?
Answer: AS MANY AS YOUR FINGERS ALLOW YOU TO TYPE!!! Seriously. I applied to more than 40 internships and heard back from two companies. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there. BE THE PITBULL!
Internship Success Story:
I recently got accepted as a photo intern with The Atlantan and Jezebel magazine here in Atlanta. This was a very competitive internship to land, but they said they were most impressed with how available and eager I am to serve the company in the best way. Like I said before, I applied to more than 40 companies, and this was the golden ticket. Have the Career Center here at Georgia State review your resume and be presentable and well-mannered in interviews. Landing an internship might consist of sleepless nights and cups of coffee, but, you want to be the “go-to” guy, remember?
You know where to find me,
